How to Get Your Free iPhone Bumper

When Steven P. Jobs, Apple’s chief executive, said the company would offer free iPhone 4 bumpers and cases, he didn’t mention there would be an app for that. But of course, there is.

(iPhone Customers must request their free bumpers or cases within 30 days of buying the phone)

On Friday, Apple posted a downloadable application for the iPhone 4 that allows phone owners to sign up for a free bumper or case that will protect a weak spot on the phone that can reduce the signal of phone calls and data connections.

The process is simple. After downloading the iPhone 4 application from the iTunes store, phone owners will be asked to enter their iTunes username and password and will then be walked through a process of picking the bumper or case they would like for their phone.

The bumpers, which surround the edge of the phone, are expected to run out quickly because there are in limited supplies.

The program also has a deadline. Apple said customers who bought an iPhone before July 23, must apply for the free bumper or case by Aug. 22. All other customers will need to apply for the case “within 30 days of your iPhone 4 purchase.” The entire program ends on Sept. 30.

Apple is also offering a full refund to customers who have already bought an Apple-made bumper. On the company’s Web site it says, “If you bought from Apple, we will give you a full refund for your previously purchased iPhone 4 Bumper, including any taxes and shipping fees.”

For customers hoping to avoid adding a hunk of plastic or rubber to the edge of their iPhone 4, there are now a range of third-party products that can protect the phones antennas. Earlier this week, I wrote about two designers from Brooklyn, who are selling Band-aids for the phone, which they call Antenn-aid.

The discussion of the iPhone 4 antenna in the blogosphere seems to have hushed since last week, when it reached a peak in the days before Apple’s iPhone 4 press conference.
